How restoration works

1. Every painting arrives layered: varnish on top, then whatever happened to it over the years, then the original scene underneath everything.
2. Hold anywhere on the canvas to work that patch. Each hold removes one layer, in one pass. There is no undo.
3. Toggle raking light to feel how much still lies beneath a patch, without seeing what it is.
4. Hang the painting whenever you decide it's done — early or late, whole or bare.
5. The placard tells the truth: what you kept, what you lost, and what the museum thought of your restraint.

Hold a patch to clean it, one layer per pass. Raking light shows how much remains without telling you what it is.
